Brendan Fleig-Goldstein works on the philosophical foundations of cognitive science, with a particular focus on normativity and cognition. His research develops a framework of resource rationality to answer questions such as how to evaluate how well cognitive systems make use of limited resources, how cognitive limitations affect epistemic norms, and how scientists can use assumptions about the resource rationality of a system to provide evidence for cognitive models. Currently, he is applying this framework to formulate an account of how to empirically determine what kinds of normative commitments are present in AI systems. Additionally, his work investigates induction across the sciences, focusing on non-probabilistic scientific reasoning, such as demonstrative and eliminative induction, and topological learning theory.
