Colloquium Talk on Thursday, February 25, 2021 speaker Aminah Hasan-Birdwell (Columbia University)

Coloquium Talk on Thursday, February 25, 2021 with speaker Aminah Hasan-Birdwell , of Columbia University. Title of the talk "The Moral Danger of Politcal Factions: Mary Astell on Political Consent, Rebellion, and Civil War." The talk will be from 4:10-6:00PM on Zoom. The link will be emailed the week of the talk.

This paper examines two of Mary Astell’s political writings, A Fair Way with the Dissenters and Their Patrons (1704) and An Impartial Inquiry into the Causes of Rebellion (1704), which criticized texts and public speeches that were sympathetic to various political dissenters during the English Civil Wars (1642–1651). My analysis argues that although Astell’s Tory-motivated political pamphlets are polemical in nature, they express genuine philosophic and political reflections that further her sustained challenge to the Lockean doctrine of consent and specify the moral dangers in tolerating the past actions and views of political factions.
