Admissions

The Columbia Philosophy Department, after a highly successful PhD admissions exercise in 2024 that recruited a large incoming class, is pausing PhD admissions for the 2025-26 admissions cycle and is not accepting applications for Fall 2025 entry.

We will resume PhD admissions for Fall 2026 entry. We continue to welcome admissions for the M.A. in Philosophy and M.A. in Philosophical Foundations of Physics.

The Department of Philosophy at Columbia University offers fall admission for its three graduate programs:

Ph.D. in Philosophy

M.A. in Philosophy

M.A. in Philosophical Foundations of Physics

The deadline for M.A. program applications is March 27, 2025.

Please note that the application process for all three programs is entirely online, through the Admissions page on the Columbia Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS) website

The Department of Philosophy does not offer an open house or tours for interested applicants.

Requests for application fee waivers are handled by GSAS; please see this page.

Please note that, per GSAS, with the sole exception of approved dual-degree programs, students may not pursue a degree in more than one Columbia program concurrently, and may not be registered in more than one degree program at any institution in the same semester. Enrollment in another degree program at Columbia or elsewhere while enrolled in a GSAS master's or doctoral program is strictly prohibited by the Graduate School. Violation of this policy will lead to the rescission of an offer of admission, or termination for a current student.

Answers to several questions can be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page on the GSAS website. For questions related to the online admissions application, please write to [email protected].

For questions related specifically to a program and the department, please write to Haley Donovan, Academic Programs Coordinator, at [email protected].
