BA/MA Option
The Department of Philosophy offers the BA/MA option to Columbia undergraduate students.
The BA/MA option is available only to current Columbia undergraduates (Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of General Studies, and Barnard College).
Applicants apply during their junior year or during the first semester of their senior year.
Applicants admitted via the BA/MA option receive permission to commence MA coursework for the program of their choice, with a promise of official admission to the MA program following the conferral of the undergraduate degree.
Additional information on transfer credits, application deadlines, and other policies pertaining to the BA/MA option can be found here on the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences website. Please note the following:
- Only juniors or first-semester seniors are eligible to apply for the BA/MA option.
- Applicants admitted via the BA/MA option receive permission to begin graduate-level coursework, with a promise of official admission to the MA program after they receive their undergraduate degree. They are not required to formally respond to the offer of BA/MA admission.
- When their expected undergraduate completion date approaches, the Office of Admissions will contact applicants to confirm that they expect to complete their degree on schedule and wish to enroll in the MA program.
- GSAS will issue the formal MA admission letter. Like all incoming MA students, they must pay the tuition deposit in order to accept the offer and secure their spot in the entering cohort. In addition, they must also participate in the same credential verification process as all other applicants admitted to GSAS.
